During the month of May, the 3rd Meeting of Clinical Research Centers was held, a virtual event that brought together the main actors of the clinical studies ecosystem in Colombia, who discussed the advances and challenges facing the country in terms of clinical trials.
Thanks to the efforts made by the different actors in the health sector, Colombia is a powerhouse in clinical research in Latin America, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The pandemic prompted us to reinvent the way we have operated ensuring that all patients continue in clinical trials without delay. In fact, 2020 was the best year of randomized clinical trials in the country. We continue working with all the players in the sector to promote clinical research in the country, ”says Liliana Ferro, Director of Clinical Research at MSD Colombia.
One of the most valuable lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic in this field was incorporating more resources and technology into the operation of clinical trials. Due to the preventive isolation and quarantines, it was necessary to reinforce the follow-up and fundamental care for each of the patients who participated in the investigations.
The value of clinical research
Clinical trials are research studies in which people voluntarily participate in order to observe the response to drugs or treatments under development. The role of clinical trials is critical in finding innovative treatments to save and improve lives.
Colombia stands out in this field thanks to its scientific rigor, ethics and quality. In addition, because it offers the necessary guarantees to conduct clinical research of the highest level by having a rigorous regulatory agency and strict regulations on this matter. In fact, 5 Colombian research centers have been classified among the 15 best in Latin America.
It should be noted that clinical research brings enormous benefits to the country, in terms of timely access of patients to innovative, quality treatments, as well as improving and increasing the medical knowledge base, promoting foreign investment in Colombia and generating jobs, conditions that undoubtedly contribute to stimulate social and economic development.
